After successful short runs at the English Theatre Berlin and Soho Theatre, London, we are overjoyed that Attention Seekers are bringing Short Shrifts to The Performance Centre.
Twelve short plays by Globe and National playwright Peter Oswald, ten minute tragedies and comedies. A bullfight in an office. A ventriloquist’s abusive love for his dummy. God’s first girlfriend. With live music accompaniment, Short Shrifts keelhauls the audience from one extreme of theatre to the other. All the disparate elements that Oswald wove together in large-scale verse plays for Mark Rylance at the Globe, and at the National Theatre, are here reassembled in short form. Peter Oswald performs with Josephine Larsen, a hugely versatile actor with twenty-five years of experience in erotic dance, film, theatre and cabaret in Berlin and throughout Europe.
Both are accompanied by Nemo Jones, a phenomenally talented multi-musician, singer, performer, song writer, who has worked with artists like Faithless, Urban Species and Galliano. ‘You have brought text back to the theatre’ was one audience-member’s comment, and this is the unashamed ambition of Short Shrifts.
To combine the extremes of physical theatre and music with language that is at times heightened and extravagant, at times earthy and direct. In Short Shrifts you will savour the distilled experience of twenty years of playwrighting for the big and small theatres of Britain – and as many years of music/performance in the brightest and darkest spaces in Europe.
